So the Yankees came in here and took the series 2-1 to start the season with a 3-1 win in extras, so what. I am obviously pissed but looking at it with whatever optimism I can find. Its the first series of the season and it is a long season so I am not worried and trying not to criticize anything yet. What really surprised me was that a 10 inning Sox-Yanks game took just over 3 hours and it felt like a bulk of it was the top of the 10th.
Papelbon gave up the solo shot to Curtis Granderson, lifting New York over Boston in the top of the 10th. Gardner later scored on a fielders choice 5 batters later.
The best thing to take from this game would be Ortiz's first hit and RBI of the season. Papi hit a line drive to right scoring Pedroia. Ortiz went 1-4 and continued to hit into the shift and not looking great against Pettitte. Papi's start raised questions of why Lowell did not make the start against the lefty. Ortiz has had success against Pettitte in the past but looking back on it, it would have been nice to see Lowell in the line-up.
Lackey didn't look too bad out there tonight. He went 6 innings giving up only 3 hits, 2 BB, and 3 K's. He reached the century mark in pitches preventing him to come out for the 7th. All 3 Red Sox starters in the series failed to go past 6 innings. Kinks need to be worked out and all should be fine for their next starts (I hope).
