The Red Sox completed a minor move this afternoon, sending utility player Yamaico Navarro and minor league pitcher Kendal Volz to Kansas City for IF Mike Aviles.
Aviles broke into the majors at age 27 in 2008 and hit .325 in 102 games. Since then, he's regressed down to average-player levels (at best). At age 30, he's having a terrible year, posting a .656 OPS, including a not-very-Boston .261 OBP. Of course, in 40 PAs this year Yamaico's OPS is .626, so it's not like we're losing Ted Williams here.
All in all, it's a flip of utility bench guys, simply exchanging a young one for an old one.
Aviles will be in uniform tonight, wearing no. 3.
