Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
Brewers hitting coach Dale Sveum is a finalist for the Red Sox managerial job and will meet with ownership this week for a second interview, according to a source with knowledge of the process.
Sveum, who now has to be considered the frontrunner for the job, is a former Red Sox third base coach who has impressed team officials with his detailed preparation and advanced knowledge of the game.
The general managers meetings begin tomorrow in Milwaukee, and Sveum is expected to fly in and meet with owners John Henry , Tom Werner and Larry Lucchino at some point this week. It’s unclear if the team will invite any of the other candidates back for a second interview.
The other contenders for the job are Pete Mackanin, Sandy Alomar Jr., Torey Lovullo and Gene Lamont. Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux withdrew from consideration.
Herald: Second interview looming for Sveum
After Maddux pulled his name out of the running, this was Sveum's job to lose. Still intrigued to see how someone who is known as a risk taker will do in this city. People crucify Bill Belichick every time he takes a shot and it blows up in his face and he has three rings. Sveum still leaves a sour taste in the mouth of some. I wonder if some in the stands will scream "ROCCO BALDELLI" at him. (I'm giving way too much credit to those that would be at Fenway to get that reference.)
It's also being reported on 98.5 The Sports Hub that one more person is getting a second interview. I'd put my money on Sandy Alomar Jr. because Cherington seemed enamored by him. A decision should be made soon as Cherington would want his manager with him during the Winter meetings.
