This whole thumb epidemic is hitting Boston by storm, and now we learn that Andrew Bailey's injury is a bit more serious than initially thought and surgery is possible.
Red Sox closer Andrew Bailey has been told he needs surgery on his right thumb according to major league sources..
Bailey was examined by team doctors in Boston today. He will be in Cleveland on Tuesday to get a second opinion from Dr. Thomas Graham, a respected hand specialist and surgeon.
If Graham agrees with the recommendation for surgery, it could happen as soon as Tuesday. It is uncertain how long Bailey would be out.
Manager Bobby Valentine said today that the situation was a concern.
"When a player is injured I always am very concerned and always try to make alternative plans. If he jumps right back in, then I’m pleasantly surprised," he said "When guys are hurt, they’re hurt and he couldn’t pitch for a couple of days, you know? I’m not sure how long."
What a great way to start the season! I fear the results of Josh Beckett's tests.
