After every series, we'll take stock of how each individual and group performance affects their overall value.
Lineup
Daniel Nava: His production at the top of the lineup continues to diminish. Game 1 was his best showing, and it wasn't that good.
Pedro Ciriaco: Pedro gave Sox fans something to cheer about and temporarily blinded us from how bad this team actually is.
David Ortiz: Big Papi was a beast in the series. Ortiz went 7-for-13, with a pair of RBI and 6 walks. Walking him wasn't a bad idea for the Yankees.
Adrian Gonzalez: Gonzo was on fire in the series before leaving game with flu-like symptoms. Gonzalez went 7-for-11 in the first three games before leaving game 4, where he went 0-for-1. His average is steadily climbing and the All-Star break may be a perfect time to recover.
Cody Ross: Aside from the solo homer in game 1, Cody had a tough series. He has settled down since returning from the DL.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia: Salty had the big 3-run homer in the 1st inning of game 1, then it all went down hill from there. After that homer, Salty struck out 10 times. A few days off will treat him well.
Mauro Gomez: Gomez did a nice little job filling in at third. A 7-for-15 performance against the Yankees is a nice addition to the resumé.
Mike Aviles: Still struggling to get hot again, and Valentine is still struggling to figure out where he belongs in the lineup.
Ryan Kalish: Kalish needs more time in AAA. The production is scarce and more time in Pawtucket will be a great confidence boost.
Ryan Sweeney: Sweeney has come out to a slow start in his 2 games since coming off of the DL. He needs more time.
Nick Punto: It is nice to see Nick Punto perform. Too bad most of his teammates couldn't join him. Nick went 5-for-10 in the series and responded well when he had to jump into the cleanup spot (2-for-3) when Gonzo left game 4 early.
Kelly Shoppach: The only player in the series to only get into one game, so he was "the bench". Shoppach wasn't anything special in the day game of the double header.
Starting Pitching
Awful, just awful. We can only hope they don't revert to their awful form that began the season.
Bullpen
I have no idea what happened to the bullpen. Some relievers did pitch well, but as a group, they were awful. The starters and relievers are ending the first half as they started the season. I have no confidence in either group.
Managing
The team is slumping and Bobby is going down with them.
Overall
They were just awful. We should be thankful they salvaged one game.
