The Red Sox have made it known to both David Ortiz and Cody Ross that they would like the hitters back, and will begin negotiations in earnest next week, says Joe McDonald of ESPNBoston (via MLBTradeRumors).
Ortiz has never been in a better position to get a two-year deal from Boston, despite being 37 next year (!) and coming off a serious Achilles injury. The bad blood the Red Sox generated with their fans is one reason, but another is on the field: Ortiz was excellent when healthy last year. And that's before you look at the hitting market, which is filled with drug addicts, defense-first outfielders, and about-to-be-severely-overpaid-on-base-specialists.
Papi knows the market, the fan base loves him, and he's still producing. Let's just get this done with so we can move on to bigger problems.
