Scott Atchison will not be tendered a contract, becoming a free agent for the second straight offseason, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.
It's not a huge surprise. The Red Sox have a number of roster issues to deal with before tonight's non-tender deadline, and it's hard to prioritize a 36-year old reliever who vastly outperformed expectations last year with a 1.58 ERA.
The difference this year? That sterling ERA makes him a more attractive candidate to other teams. I would not be surprised at all to see Atchison catch on with another club on a major-league deal this year, even if it's just for a year. If so, that's one more roster spot we'll have to fill.
