According to press reports out of Venezuela, the Red Sox viewed a workout done by Bobby Abreu that included his taking grounders at first base.
The lefthanded hitting outfielder could fill a spot on the bench for the Sox. But he has never played first base professionally. Abreu also is 18 of 87 (.207) with one home run in his career as a pinch hitter. Presumably, if the Red Sox were to sign him it would be to a minor league contract.

Talk about a slow news day. The big story to kick off 2013 is the work out of a guy approaching his 40s who may be an option for the team if he's willing to sign a minor-league deal and switch positions.
Abreu will always be most famous in Boston for being the guy we decided not to trade for in 2006...the same guy who the Yankees acquired and tore the cover off the ball for two months, including the infamous five-day beatdown New York served the Red Sox to end their postseason hopes. Good times.
Won't we all be glad when this Napoli deal is cleared up and we can stop worrying about first base?
