The writing was on the wall, but it's now official, as Scott Atchison has signed on with a team other than the Red Sox (and not actually in Japan!), as the Mets agreed to a minor-league deal with the reliever (via MLBTR).
I'll miss Atch. We paid him next to nothing (less than $1.4 million per B-R) and got three solid years out of him. The first two years he appeared in low-leverage situations, but last year he was used in a variety of ways and was at his most effective, giving us 1.7 WAR for a half-million bucks.
Additionally, he provided a lot of roster flexibility, as the Red Sox were able to pass him through waivers numerous times since nobody else wanted him.
He might not turn out to be anything for the Mets, of course. He's coming off an elbow injury, is turning 37 in March, and has roughly zero pedigree/reputation (see the aforementioned roster flexibility point).
